Russell.

Most of us have been raised to think of the brain as the ultimate ”decider” for our body and our life. After all, we’ve been told the brain is very intelligent. It can process information and come up with rational and wise decisions. It is the be all and end all. And the brain is seen as the masculine energy while the feminine energy is seen soming from the heart. But it wasn’t always this way.

In ancient times, societies were matriarchal, not patriarchal. And the matriarchal society was guided by the heart… the mother’s love “ran the show” raising the children, teaching them from the “hearth” the fundamental values of caring, sharing, cooperation, etc. The men, in these societies, went out and provided for the family. They went out to hunt to bring back food and they also provided protection from predators and aggressors.

This was the state of life. Family life and community life revolved around the women raising the children with love and teaching them the values needed to be a wise being that contributed to the whole. The women also taught respect for Nature as they went out foraging for food and knew the need to only take what was needed and leave enough for the cycle of life to continue.

And then things changed…

The brain started to thing more highly of itself. It started to think that it was the most important, much more imporant than the mothers and their loving hearts raising the children and providing not only initial life, but the nurturing of that life in body, mind, and spirit. However, the brain concluded that it was the most important as it provided food by hunting and protection.

The brain based its observation on a competitive perspective, not one where two ways of being were not only equal but complimentary to each other. The two energies, or perspectives, were meant to work in partnership: the brain working in tandem with the heart. Over time, however, the brain took over “running the show” relegating the wisdom of the heart to a spot of weakness and not to be taken seriously. The brain and its ego became the supreme deciders for this planet.

But research (and experience) has shown that the center of our wise decision-making process is our heart. And, relegating our heart to the back of the line and not considering its input has created serious problems in our society and our world. After all, would a good loving heart pollute the waters for the people living downstream? Would a caring heart let the neighbor’s children go hungry? Would a generous heart hoard food and goods while the rest of the village struggled? Of course not.

So, we now come full circle. It is time to return the heart to its proper place. Or rather return the brain to its proper place, as the supporter of life at the heart, or the hearth. The brain is there to help, to contribute, not to rule. The brain, while obviously important and useful, is not meant to be the final arbitrator and judge. The heart is the source of Wisdom. The brain the source of rational information.

I recently watched a video presentation by Gregg Braden, a well-known scientist and metaphysician about the encoded message in our cells and our body. (Video shared at the end of this article.) And in the video, he presents a short meditation where you ask questions of your Heart. And I capitalize the word Heart here, because we are not speaking of the physical pump that circulates blood and nutrients throughout the body. We are speaking of the energetic heart, the guiding light of our soul.

The first question that Gregg shares in his meditation provides a fundamental guide for our life. And here is a short version of the process: Put your hand on your heart center and bring your focus to it. Get quiet and calm and ask: “My Heart, what do you need from me right now?”

When I first did this guided meditation, I immediately “heard” or felt the answer: it was Joy. What my Heart (and thus my Life) needed most from me was Joy. And as I felt the presence of Joy fill my body and my mind, I realized its importance in my Life. It provided a basic tenet from which to guide my thoughts and my actions. It was based in gratitude for the past, the present, and the future.

At the time, I thought this was the “permanent” answer to that question. However, as I now write this article, another answer presents itself: Peace. And I realize that this is not a one time question which provides a “one size fits all answer”. The question is to be used to provide an answer based on the present moment.

You see, my brain had jumped in and assumed (as it often does) that there was only one answer, one way to answer a question or to solve a problem. After all, that’s how it was trained in school. There was only one “right” answer: yes or no, right or wrong, this or that. The answer was the same for everyone.

Yet, when we live from the Heart, we realize that there is no “one answer”. Even saying we must live from the Heart is not completely always the case. Sometimes, the brain or the rational mind is the guide. If you are climbing a rock wall, the brain may be the best one to suggest which is the safest position for your hands and your feet. Though, there as well you have another partner which is your intuition. So, one size, or one answer does not necessarily fit all.

What I discovered as I typed the question again this morning: “My heart, what do you need from me right now?” was another answer. This morning, the answer is Peace. And now my brain is berating me for not “getting this” immediately, of not realizing that this wasn’t a question that provides one answer forever.

I now understand that the question is one that we must live with and make part of our day to day, and moment to moment, life: My Heatt, what do you need from me right now? And the answer will flow and change as the moments of your life and your encounters with others take place. The answer will change and can become your guiding light in your moment to moment experience.

And as I re-ask the question, after having written this article, the answer is again Joy! I am happy and joy-full to share these insights with you. I am filled with Joy at having come across this teaching myself. I am looking forward to enJOYing a day, and a life, lived with this question: My Heart what do you need from me right now?

There are two other questions presented in Gregg’s video (see below) which bring this process to a deeper level. However, if you simply adopt this one question, you will have made a giant step in creating a life that will be fulfilling, not only for you but for those around you.

So what does your Heart need from you right now?

Video presentation by Gregg Braden: Pure Human Divinity

Related book (and card deck):

Chakra Cards for Belief Change: The Healing InSight Method
by Nikki Gresham-Record

An easy-to-use therapy tool for transforming unhelpful belief patterns and envisioning positive change:

• Identifies 28 beliefs per chakra that can be energetically realigned using the Healing InSight Method
• Offers a tool set of therapeutic processes, affirmations, visualization, and bodywork for the practical application of the transformational belief realignment method
• Includes 56 full-color, high-vibration chakra images, one for each main chakra as well as 7 additional empowering images for each chakra

Info/Order this card deck.

More Inspirational Card Decks

About The Author
